Classroom Announcements:
Week of March 19 Welcome back!!! I hope you all had a restful, exciting, and safe spring break. We had a great morning meeting choosing adjectives to describe our spring breaks! We are starting our last quarter of Second Grade. Can you believe it? Time truly flies! Your wonderful 2nd grader is well on their way to being a 3rd grader. Report cards will go live this week, and I will send out a letter detailing what we did in the 3rd quarter and what to expect in this last quarter. As you may have noticed, the expectations and rigor have increased in the last part of the year. Keep that in mind as you notice the work that is coming home. Today we launched our Eanes history unit by discussing history in general. Your students were so incredibly insightful, I can't believe they're only 7 or 8! I will email out the brainstorming web they created, as they are very proud of themselves! :) In math, we are starting to learn about fractions, and we are learning about the moon's phases in Science. So much fun learning going on in room 409! :) Have a great week!! Full Buckets, Full Hearts, Katy Schueller Week of February 26 I need to start this week off with yet another giant THANK YOU! Don't forget that tomorrow, Tuesday, February 27, is an early release day and no homework night. Friday, March 2 is MOVIE NIGHT! :) Last week your kiddos were hard at work finishing up their amazing projects for open house. We will be starting a poetry unit in Language Arts. We have started learning about measurement, area, and perimeter in math. We will start learning about wind in Science! Lots of new and exciting learning to fit into these next weeks before spring break!! Have an amazing week, and thank you again!!!!! We will also be creating new reading goals this week. Students may be sent home with the same homework book more than once this week, but each time it will be read for a different purpose. Science: We are studying the water cycle this week. Look out for some projects at open house! :) Have a fantastic week! Full Buckets, Full Hearts, Katy Schueller Week of February 12 I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! I got to see some of our own 409 friends play some basketball this weekend! Go BPE! :) We have a lot of fun things happening in 409 this week... A couple of reminders:
This week in... Math: We are working on complex number patterns and algebra basics. The students are recognizing patterns in lists of numbers in the hundreds and thousands. We are also practicing part-part-whole, creating number sentences, and finding missing addends. Language Arts: We will be starting a biography project this week. We have been learning about many important people in history over the last few weeks through read-a-louds, discussions, and independent reading. Students will have the opportunity to choose an important person they want to research further! I think they will be so excited about this... you would all be SO impressed with the deep discussions they have had lately based around some important people in our country's history! Social Studies: We will continue to connect Social Studies and LA as we dig into our biographies. We are also continuing to cover Black History Month, President's Day, and the Olympics. February is a busy month! Science: We are continuing to track and chart the moon phases and weather. We will learn more about weather and the water cycle. I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday!! :) Full Buckets, Full Hearts, ~Katy Schueller Week of February 5 Wow, yesterday was such a beautiful day! I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy the weather a bit! Also....what a game!!! Happy for see our BPE alum get the win! (since it couldn't be the Packers ;) ) This week's reminders: *Read-a-Thon (BookSpring) envelopes are due by Friday. *I will be out on Thursday, for a district Social Studies curriculum planning. This week in... Math: We are finishing adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers, and will be working on number patterns. Language Arts: We have a lot going on here! We are talking about character traits, point of view, and adjectives. We are also continuing to write nonfiction paragraphs in our guided reading groups based on leveled books the students read in class. Some of them have been doing further research on their topics using library books and technology. We are continuing to roll out the WTW program; today was the first day students got individualized word lists based on their spelling and phonics needs. ALSO we will be starting our Secret Admirer letters this week....these are so cute and will be shared with you at our Valentine's Day party! :) Science: We are continuing to track the phases of the moon and the weather this week. I will miss your darlings on Thursday, but they will be in good hands, and I will be back on Friday!! Full Buckets, Full Hearts, Katy Schueller Week of January 29 I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather yesterday! We had an exciting week last week with our field trip and STEAM day, and this week we are buckling down to get a lot of learning done! :) A few quick reminders... * Tomorrow, January 30, is an EARLY RELEASE and no homework night. Students will be dismissed at 12:50 pm tomorrow. *The Read-a-Thon continues this week....the students are super motivated and reading more than ever! :) * YOU'RE INVITED to our class Valentine's Day party on February 14 from 11:35 - 12:40 for an ice cream sundae party! *Our class Scholastic order is open for two more days if you still want to order! This week in... Math: We have wrapped up 2-digit subtraction with regrouping... I am SO PROUD of the kids, as they all did a great job grasping this sometimes difficult concept. This week, we will be doing three digit addition. Language Arts: Today, we started the Words Their Way program. This is a differentiated program geared towards helping students with spelling, phonics, and vocabulary. Each student was given a special notebook where their word pattern work will be done. In a few weeks, students will get their own sets of words specifically tailored towards their spelling and word pattern needs. To start us off and introduce the various activities, we are all doing the same word sort to begin. This is a very hands on programs where students themselves discover word patterns by sorting words....this makes it much more meaningful (and therefore more likely to stick) than me telling them the pattern each week. We are excited to launch this in 2nd grade! Science: Today we started our unit on Air and Weather. This will be a really fun unit for the students! Social Studies: We are wrapping up learning about goods and services & producers and consumers. We have also been reading a lot biographies of influential people in history. Last week, we read about Malala and then compared her to MLK. So excited for another week of learning with your kids!! Full Buckets, Full Hearts, ~Katy Schueller Week of January 22 Welcome to our first FULL week of 2018! I am loving the change in weather; the kids seemed to be loving it as well at recess today! We have a super busy and fun week ahead of us. We have a field trip to Zach Scott on Thursday to see "The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. " We will pack a sack lunch and eat lunch there. The weather looks like it will cooperate. Then, on Friday we have STEAM Day. This is a fun day to remember. I believe the STEAM day schedules will go live on Thursday. Also, a reminder that the Read-a-Thon starts today! This is a fun and engaging way to keep your students reading....they all seem pretty excited about it! Scholastic order will be placed on the 31st if you're interested in ordering this month! This week in... Math: We are wrapping up subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping (borrowing) this week. Thursday is our day for the end of unit test. You will be seeing more and more word problems now that know how to add and subtract (with regrouping). Some of these word problems will be tricky with extra information or extra steps (2 to 3 step words problems). LA: We are doing final drafts of our nonfiction writing about MLK this week. We will also be trying to write nonfiction paragraphs about various topics in our guided reading groups. We will also be talking about adjectives. Science: We wrapped up our unit on sound and vibrations today. We will begin our weather unit later this week! Social Studies: We will be discussing the concept of producers and consumers and goods vs. services in LA and Social Studies. HAVE A GREAT WEEK! Full Buckets, Full Hearts, Katy Schueller |
